Lewis Hamilton and Tom Brady Are Watch Twins Now

Sir Lewis Hamilton is off to an uncharacteristically slow start this F1 season, but his off-track style continues to dominate the field by miles. In addition to gracing the first-ever Miami Grand Prix some very big race weekend fits from the likes of Valentino, Fendi, and Lous Vuitton (along with a bust-down protest of Formula 1’s attempted crackdown on jewelry), Hamilton’s watch wardrobe remains on-point with a rotating selection of timepieces from IWC, the official timing sponsor of his Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. While the brand’s signature pilot watch aesthetic was defined in the 1940s, it lends itself remarkably well to Hamilton’s signature matchy-matchy ensembles in 2022, whether he’s scooting around the paddock or chasing birdies in Miami Beach.

Following the weekend’s Miami Grand Prix, which included guest appearances from Michael Jordan, David Beckham, Michelle Obama, Pharrell and (checks notes) Michael Douglas, Hamilton hit the greens with fellow GOAT (and fellow IWC ambassador) Tom Brady to smash some drives in support of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Hamilton and Brady, it turns out, have more in common than their untouchable records. Both showed up in versions of IWC Big Pilot’s Watch TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” in matching khaki-colored ceramic, which worked just as well with Hamilton’s golfing ensemble as it did with his hot pink Valentino fit on the weekend.

Since it doesn’t have the Monaco’s Formula 1 connection, or the Carrera’s tie-in to Porsche 911s, TAG Heuer’s Autavia tends to be among the brand’s more slept-on models. It seems appropriate then that Jimmy Butler, a man who understands the plight of the underdog, wore this piece to cap off his round-two victory over the Sixers, his former team. Inspired by vintage chronographs and equipped with a chronometer-certified flyback movement and a scratch-proof black DLC-case, it’s a low key flex worthy of one of the league’s most underrated stars.

Next to P.J. Tucker’s god-tier sneakers and Tyler Herro’s penchant for leather trenches and Breton stripes, Erik Spoelstra’s wardrobe doesn’t really offer much to remark on. But when your team is doing as well as Miami is these days, you can afford to wear a black polo and let your wins speak for themselves. For anyone else in search of an under-the-radar timepiece that’ll look right with an all-black look (or pretty much anything else in your casual wardrobe), you could do a lot worse than Spoelstra’s classic ana-digi G-Shock.

Joining the winningest team in F1 history has its benefits—beyond just a seat in one of the fastest cars on the grid. Just ahead of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver’s fifth-place finish at the Miami Grand Prix, official timepiece sponsor IWC marked the occasion by giving the entire squad their first-ever team watch.
