Watch Dakota Johnson As a Jane Austen Heroine in the First Trailer for Netflix’s ‘Persuasion’

Does the world need another Jane Austen adaptation? As it turns out, yes. Especially if that Jane Austen adaptation stars Dakota Johnson.

Having starred in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s take on the Elena Ferrante novel The Lost Daughter alongside Olivia Colman, Johnson has teamed up with another powerhouse female director, Carrie Cracknell, to adapt Jane Austen’s Persuasion for Netflix.

A highly respected name in British theater, Cracknell has helmed productions at both the Royal Court and the Young Vic and recently directed Jake Gyllenhaal in Sea Wall/A Life on Broadway. Persuasion will mark her film debut.

According to Netflix, the movie will remain true to the novel but will present a “modern, witty approach” to Austen’s final book. “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.”

Among Dakota Johnson’s costars? Henry Golding, Cosmo Jarvis, and Nikki Amuka-Bird. Production took place in and around Salisbury, with Netflix sharing the first images of the cast on June 14, 2021.

“Let these exquisite photos of Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis, and Henry Golding tide you over until Persuasion, a most excitable new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel from director Carrie Cracknell, arrives on Netflix in 2022,” the streaming giant wrote on its Instagram accounts.

Notably, Cracknell’s film is one of two high-profile adaptations of Persuasion happening this year. Director Mahalia Belo has signed on to translate Anne Elliot’s story to the big screen, with Succession’s Sarah Snook due to star in the lead role opposite Game of Thrones’ Joel Fry.
