Hydrating foundations are, understandably, super popular. The comfort, creaminess, ease of application and surge of moisture are all great benefits of a hydrating foundation. Logically, people on TikTok have sought ways to add even more hydration to their foundation. One technique that has caught on is putting your foundation in water before applying it.
BODYWHY is the originator of the trend, seemingly by accident. The brand’s TikTok shared a video of a woman putting the foundation in water to prove it’s waterproof. Then TikToker Rachel Rigler shared a video of her trying this technique noting that “celebrity makeup artist, Rebecca Restrepo, does this on her clients! Says it removes excess oil!” Rigler pumps her foundation into a cup of water, and while it looks strange in the glass, her foundation looks great on application. Then she dabs her face with a paper towel to show that the foundation is water and transfer-proof. The trend has caught on, with Danielle Marcan also giving it a try with similar results, noting that her foundation felt fresher than usual.
Sure, it works when TikTokers try it, but what do makeup artists think? Makeup artist Stephanie Flor tells us that the trend is reminiscent of wetting sponges or spraying rose water on the skin for extra hydration. Flor recommends doing one of these hacks instead of putting foundation in water.
“It’s a waste of product and an additional unnecessary step if you’re trying to achieve a flawless finish,” explains Flor. She adds that her friend, Jose Rosello, also a makeup expert tried the trick as well. He reported that it’s a mess, you lose a lot of product, and it’s time-consuming, adding that it shouldn’t be used professionally. While you can try the trend for yourself, the same effect can be achieved through quicker, cleaner, easier steps.
