We told you all the way back in January that a new hyaluronic acid filler was being tested in the U.S. in the lower face to provide more definition, and today Allergan Aesthetics, an AbbVie company, announced that Juvéderm Volux was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use along the jawline.
Earlier this year, Beverly Hills, CA dermatologist Ava Shamban, MD, told us that a filler for lower face reshaping and contouring was on its way: “There is a product being used in Europe called Juvéderm Volux that is in trials here in the United States for use on the jawline,” she noted.
Filler used in this area—sometimes combined with neurotoxin injections to create a slimming effect in the lower face—has been performed off-label for years, however, Volux is the first product that gets the FDA’s stamp of approval for this area.
Miami dermatologist Jeremy Green, MD, who served as a clinical trial investigator, said participants reported high satisfaction with the results of their treatment. “At six months post-treatment, 89.7 percent of treatment group participants were willing to recommend the treatment to a friend, with the majority continuing to recommend treatment at 12 months,” shared Dr. Green in AbbVie’s press release. “I am excited to now be able to offer this treatment option to all of my patients seeking an improved jawline.”
While Radiesse (+) is already FDA-approved for the jawline area, it’s made of calcium hydroxylapatite, which means it’s a longer-lasting filler but it’s not reversible. Volux, a hyaluronic acid filler, is said to last up to six months and is firmer and higher in viscosity, or thickness, than other HA fillers designed for the lips, cheeks and chin. Like all HA fillers, Volux can be reversed if needed using an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. According to Allergan’s press materials, Volux provides “even more structure, cohesivity and lift capacity to create an improved jawline that appears more defined in real life and on camera.”
“It’s certainly a welcome addition to Juvéderm’s line of hyaluronic acid products,” says West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD. “It’s thick enough that it can sculpt the jaw without looking jowly. It’s great for patients that have lost definition in the lower face and have that sort of have that hound-dog look that occurs as you start to age. This is going to help reshape the jaw into something more youthful and defined.”
“Having a strong jawline is the crux of maintaining a youthful neck not to mention a feminine yet powerful face,” adds Dr. Shamban. “With the approval of Volux we have one more product that fits the bill.”
