Bradley Cooper got emotional, and a little weepy even, when talking about addiction and fatherhood on the SmartLess podcast with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. One thing all the men agreed on was that having children encouraged them to work on themselves.
Cooper described being addicted to cocaine, severing his Achilles tendon “right after I got fired-slash-quit Alias,” and feeling “lost” and “worthless” with “zero self-esteem.” In the wide-ranging conversation, Cooper also opened up about how Arnett helped him on his initial path to recovery, and the two bonded over wanting to better themselves for the sake of their kids.
“Fatherhood is … everything changed,” Cooper said. “Every single thing is absolutely shaded by, or brought into glorious colors, by the fact that I get to be a father to a wonderful human being.” Arnett also said, “I did find for me that one of the things that it does do is that it accelerates your work on yourself because you want to not infect them with the crap you don’t have figured out.”
Cooper has opened up about his history with addiction in the past, telling The Hollywood Reporter in a 2012 interview that he quit all drugs and alcohol at age 29 because he realized he was going to ruin his own life. “I don’t drink or do drugs at all anymore,” he said. “Being sober helps a great deal.”
It’s clear that Cooper is a devoted dad to his 5-year-old daughter Lea, whom he shares with ex Irina Shayk. Every moment, he said on the podcast, including the butt-wiping ones, is “the greatest moment of my life.”
